- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

- for decorating royal icing
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the dough into three equal portions. Leave one portion as is for the white cookies.
- Color one portion with red food coloring and the other with blue food coloring, mixing until the colors are well incorporated.
- Roll out each colored dough between sheets of parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out star shapes using a cookie cutter.
- Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Allow cookies to cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
- Decorate the cookies with royal icing in red, white, and blue designs.
Notes
- If the dough is too soft to roll out, chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
- For a fun twist, add sprinkles on top of the icing before it sets.
