Description

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this festive sourdough bread, infused with traditional flavors and a vibrant green color. Perfect for sandwiches or served with butter!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup spinach puree (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the active sourdough starter and warm water. Mix well.
  2. Add in the spinach puree, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, and dried parsley. Stir until combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 4-6 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Cover again and let it rise for another 1-2 hours.
  8. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). If using a Dutch oven, place it inside to preheat as well.
  9. Make a few slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a greener bread, you can adjust the amount of spinach puree to your liking.
  • Serve with butter or your favorite spreads.
  • This bread can also be used for sandwiches or toasted with toppings.
