  • 4 pounds pork shoulder (also known as pork butt), trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it is well coated.
  3. Place the pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
  4. In another bowl, combine the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, and chicken broth. Pour this mixture over the pork in the slow cooker.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours, until the pork is tender and easy to shred.
  6. Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and mix it with the sauce.
  7. Serve the pulled pork on buns, in tacos, or with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, let the pork marinate in the spice rub overnight in the refrigerator before cooking.
  • Feel free to adjust the level of heat by adding more or less cayenne pepper or using a spicy BBQ sauce.
