Description

A creamy, rich dessert with a smooth caramel topping, traditional in Mexican cuisine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it turns a golden brown color. Quickly pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly.
  3. In a blender, combine sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.
  4. Pour the milk mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.
  5. Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan dish.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the flan comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  8. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert onto a plate.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon to the milk mixture.
  • Ensure that the sugar is not burned while making the caramel, as it will affect the flavor.
