Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • as needed food coloring (optional)
  • as needed fondant (for decoration)
  • 4 cups buttercream frosting
  • 1 graduation cake topper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  6. If desired, divide the batter into separate bowls and add food coloring to match your graduate’s school colors. Mix until evenly colored.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, level the cakes if necessary and stack them with buttercream frosting in between each layer.
  11. Cover the entire cake with a layer of buttercream frosting and smooth it out.
  12. Decorate the cake with fondant or additional buttercream decorations. Top with a graduation cake topper.
  13. Serve and enjoy the celebration!
