Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
  • Food coloring (red, blue, yellow)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
  4. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  5. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass, and decorate with sprinkles if desired.
  6. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let cool on wire racks.
  7. To make the icing, mix powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Divide into separate bowls and add food coloring to each bowl to create different colors.
  8. Once cookies are cool, decorate with colored icing and additional sprinkles as desired.

Notes

  • For best results, chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking.
  • Feel free to get creative with the icing colors and designs to mimic fireworks!
