- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Sprinkles or crushed peppermint for decoration
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large baking dish (at least 9×13 inches).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
- Slowly pour in the hot water and mix until smooth. Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the cake is cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top.
- Decorate with sprinkles or crushed peppermint for a festive touch.
- Slice and serve to your guests!
Notes
- This cake can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container.
